What really drives website cost: a buyer's guide for 2026

Two quotes for "a website" can differ tenfold. These are the factors behind the price, and the questions to ask before you sign.

What really drives website cost: a buyer's guide for 2026

Ask five agencies to quote for a website and you may get five wildly different numbers. That is not always because someone is overcharging. The word website covers everything from a one-page brochure to a custom platform with bookings, payments and dashboards. Understanding what drives the price helps you compare quotes fairly.

Custom design or template

A template-based site is faster and cheaper because the layout already exists. Custom design starts from your brand and your customer journey, which takes more time but usually converts better and looks more distinctive. Many businesses choose a middle path: a premium theme customised to their brand.

Number of pages and content

Every page needs structure, design, copy and images. A site with fifteen service and location pages costs more than a five-page site, and professionally written content adds to the investment. It is often the part that makes the biggest difference to results.

Functionality and integrations

Booking systems, payment gateways, CRM connections, multi-language support, member areas and calculators all add development time. Integrating local gateways such as JazzCash in Pakistan or Tabby in the Gulf requires extra setup and testing.

SEO and performance from day one

Some quotes include technical SEO, schema, speed optimisation and analytics setup. Others leave them out. A cheap site that cannot rank or loads slowly ends up costing more in lost leads.

Ongoing care

Hosting, security updates, backups and content changes are recurring costs. Ask what happens after launch and who handles problems.

Questions to ask before you sign

Who owns the domain, hosting account and code? Can your team edit content without a developer? Is SEO setup included? How many revision rounds are included? What is the timeline, and what happens if it slips? Clear answers to these questions tell you more about value than the headline price.

The right website is the one that pays for itself through enquiries and sales. Judge quotes on that outcome, not just the number at the bottom.
